Art Houses

A unique prototype program that combines neighborhood stabilization with neighborhood arts programming involves taking an abandoned single family home in the Key Coalition Neighborhood and turning it into an "Art House". The Gem organization will rehabilitate the house which is located on a block at its "tipping point;" place a permanent "artist-in-residence" in the home. Working with the neighborhood, the Gem organization and the artist will conduct on-going arts programming for neighborhood residents and children. This unique neighborhood stabilization program will assist the city in tackling one of our most tragic urban core issues: 12,000 vacant homes.

Moving Closer to Neighborhood Residents

The Gem organization recently moved its headquarters into the old Fire House No. 11 at 2033 Vine Street and expanded to another gallery, the Town House Gallery at 1021 N. 7th Street in downtown Kansas City, Kansas.

Expanding and opening these gallery spaces has allowed us to:

  • 1. Expand our visual arts exhibition space; and
  • 2. Enhance our visual and performing arts-in-education programming

New Building Project

Cultural Arts Center Expansion Project

The Gem organization's long range plan includes expanding its cultural exhibition and educational programming to a larger building nearby. A new facility would provide the space for additional earned income and allow more space for educational classrooms and much-needed performance and workshop, lecture and group meeting areas.
